Why I Hate Android
Remember what the point was. M.G. reminds you. parislemon: Why do I hate Android? It’s definitely one of the questions I get asked most often these days. And most of those that don’t ask probably assume it’s because I’m an iPhone guy. People see negative take after negative take about the operating system and label me as “unreasonable” or “biased” or worse. I should probably explain. ...

Duran Duran: Last Chance on the Stairway
Last Chance on the Stairway from Rio 1982, Produced by Colin Thurston Rio was best known for its title cut, Save a Prayer and Hungry Like the Wolf. Six of the album’s nine songs were released as singles. This album was as much of a hit because of its videos as its songs. MTV played the shit out of the singles, especially Rio. Last Chance on the Stairway Makes the record for me though....

Duran Duran: Friends of Mine
Friends of Mine from Duran Duran 1981, Produced by Colin Thurston Ah, the eponymous debut release. It was a work of art. Duran is known as a New Romantic band, but this is the only real New Romantic record they released. The New Romantic scene was really in London and Duran was in Birmingham, which is funny that they are widely considered the most successful of the New Romantics. They always...

got duran?
You know the hits, Hungry Like the Wolf, Rio, The Reflex, Girls on Film, Planet Earth, Ordinary World…at least you should recognize these, if not by name definitely when you hear one. I’m a huge Duran Duran fan, one of the biggest I know, though luckily not alone. I’ve traveled all over the country (hopefully the world soon) to see them live, I have hundreds of songs including live...

A Little Bowie…
Woke up with Seven stuck in my head this morning. The album hours… was Bowie’s first album after Ziggy to not make the top 40. A shame, it’s a great album. Seven | David Bowie | hours… | 1999 Produced by David Bowie and Reeves Gabrels

Garden Levels Suck.
Hmmm…so my apartment flooded a couple years back and I had all my CDs out and the bottom shelf got destroyed. The discs are trashed. I basically took all the bad ones and threw them in a box and left it at that. Now that I’m moving again, I want to move as little as possible and now I’m going through some stuff. Before the bad, I had all the CDs ripped to my computer, so I...

Duran Duran: Night Two
So I have to write about Duran in Chicago. Not that I feel obligated to, but I did say I would, and I’m really trying to keep up on this blogging thing. After all, it’s good for your soul. Brad Karl Sam and I road tripped to Chicago. Nobody else has every traveled out of town to see a show, so it was cool for them. Traveling just to see a show is something I used to do all the time, a broken...

I woke up in my hotel this morning with a bunch of new Duran understandably running through my head. After an amazing show last night I’m a little more psyched to listen to their new record. I did give the new record, I’d say, five complete listens (two with the added tracks from the CD release). Not really enough to pass judgement, but I knew nothing was grabbing me. Then I saw quite a few...

Duran Duran: Night One
So my friend Sam and I went to see Duran Duran tonight at the Epic in Minneapolis. The show was fucking great! Simon’s vocals were spot on. The sound was a bit off, overall, not well mixed. Roger’s toms were hard to hear, keyboards and guitars were also hard to hear. I’d give the sound production about a C-, but the performance by the boys was A+. My only major complaint was the 40 minute, fan...

Greatest rock band in history. Period.
I watched a documentary tonight on the Netflix. Don’t remember why I searched, but I came across a couple Zeppelin selections, The Song Remains the Same (which, if you haven’t seen, you should watch) and something called A to Zeppelin. It was a very interesting look at Led Zeppelin. It started with John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page as studio musicians, how Page joined the Yardbirds and...

Goodnight Mick
It’s a tragedy that Mick Karn has passed away. If you’re unfamiliar with Mick’s music, I’d highly recommend you look him up; solo, Japan, Dali’s Car, Polytown and many of the other artists he played with. I once heard that Pete Townshend named Mick his favorite bass player. That’s saying a lot from a guy that played with John Entwistle for 30+ years. Goodnight Mick, you are already...

You might run into Lance Romance one day.
Back in the mid-nineties, I was just out of high school, in my first place of my own, and just out of my first real band. All I did was work and listen to music. I found tons of killer vinyl at record shops like Cheapo, Road Runner and Oarfolkjokapus. Duran, Japan, The Police, mostly early eighties stuff was the norm. On one shopping trip, the guy in Road Runner suggested a record he said was...

All You, Need Is…
A new Duran single. I’ve looked forward to this sentence constantly for the last 20 years. After a couple listens tonight, I have to say, Mark Ronson is a very welcomed thing. I really hear the old Duran with a modern sound. That’s hard to accomplish. For a group to continue to put out the same sounding records over and over is a career killer, but if the sound changes, career killer. You’re...

Cyndi, You Goonie!!
So I had my recent music playlist on shuffle and She Bop came on. (Is there a pun there?) I have to say that Cyndi is one of my favorite singers of all time. Her voice is awesome, so powerful, such range. Beyond the blatant references in the lyrics, the song has this killer bass groove. The lyrics are simple, yet well thought. When I think that this was a giant hit, I love thinking of the subject...

To the Moon…
Who’s next. One of those records that simply escaped me until recently. I got home tonight, flipped on the tube, and found I recorded a Classic Albums episode on the VH-1. I never realized that the record came out of another concept rock opera that was originally destined for film, but nobody outside of Pete Townshend got it. The record is full of unheard of studio mastery at the time. To hear...
